百年來廖添丁之所以成為臺灣民眾心目中的傳奇英雄，最初的原因是他多次犯大案，卻又難以緝捕，自然成為新聞人物。而當時教育不普及，新聞事業尚未發達，只有少數人能夠閱讀報紙，他的新聞經由庶民口耳相傳的方式廣為流傳，內容也不斷被加油添醋，主角則被美化為傳奇人物。
在傳奇化的過程中，廖添丁成為「義賊」的典型，後來更擴大成「抗日英雄」，形象被時代潮流影響而改變。按史實記載廖添丁並未參加抗日組織，所犯的案件皆為單純的司法刑事案件，而非含有政治或思想性的抗日事件，日警也只將他視為竊盜搶劫及殺人犯，並非抗日份子或思想犯。不過因為他敢去偷權貴富豪之家，而當時這些權貴富豪和日本殖民政府往往交好，廖添丁又能屢屢逃過日警的追捕，這樣的犯罪動機及行為帶有嚴重藐視、羞辱日警及日本殖民政府的意味，台民因而傳說將他強化為與日人的強權對抗，塑造成抗日英雄。國民政府來臺後，政治上的抗日傾向，在此意識的訴求之下，日治時期讓日警頭痛的廖添丁自然被當成標竿人物，民間不僅相信這些傳說，而且津津樂道，其終於被形塑成近代臺灣傳奇人物的代表，廖添丁傳說也成為臺灣社會中對於現實不滿的一種寄託與希望。
廖添丁是台灣家喻戶曉的人物，從日治時期至今，相關資料在官方與民間、史料與傳說、雅與俗等方面皆呈現豐富而多樣的面貌，而近時在學術圈中，關於廖添丁的研究如雨後春筍，由此可知「廖添丁」背後必然有其意涵，值得深入研究。廖添丁最為民眾所熟知的俠義行蹟——「劫富濟貧」，也是人們將其視為俠盜、義賊甚至是抗日英雄，深受民眾崇敬的原因；而在官方檔案中，廖添丁卻是個嚴重擾亂社會秩序的人物，是不折不扣的大盜賊。不難發現，兩者間的認知存在有極大差異，民眾將盜匪視為英雄，本身即是一種自我道德的顛覆，蘊藏著對整體日本殖民體制的不滿，這對擁有統治權的日本官方無疑是一大挑戰，亦使得日本殖民政府必須審慎因應，本論文藉由分析各類文獻文本中廖添丁的形象，論述廖添丁故事的演化及各種文本隱含的社會文化意涵。

However because he dares to steal family of the powerful official rich and powerful people, but at that time these powerful official rich and powerful people and Japan colonized the government to be often on good terms, Liau Thiam-teng could escape date police''s capturing repeatedly, such crime motive and the behavior had despise, the shame date police and Japan seriously colonize government''s meaning, the Taiwan people therefore fable strengthen him for with Japanese people''s might resistance, portrayed against Japan hero. After the National government comes to Taiwan, in the political opposition to Japan tendency, under this consciousness's demand, Japan governs Liau Thiam-teng who the time lets the date police headache the nature to regard the surveying rod character, the folk not only believes these fables, moreover loves to talk about, it is modelled finally by the shape the modern Taiwan legend character representative, the Liau Thiam-teng fable also becomes in Taiwan society regarding reality discontented one kind of reposing and the hope.
