苗栗縣通霄鎮的白沙屯媽祖前往北港朝天宮進香,是目前臺灣徒步距離最遠的進香活動。此進香活動的進行方式,具有「一切聽憑神意而決」的獨特性,活動舉辦的日期、天數,隊伍行走的路線,神轎休息的地點,均由神意主導,每年不盡相同。
本研究嘗試從進香客的觀點出發,了解他們對於神轎停駐駕在民宅休息的觀感。經探討顯示,進香客認為此乃「白沙屯媽」主動將其靈力回饋給人群,為民眾賜福或消災解厄。這和多數進香活動中,民眾必須主動向神祇祈願,有相當大的差異,說明白沙屯媽祖進香活動,呈現出不同於其他進香團體的面貌。
「白沙屯媽」的形象相當人格化,在進香過程中,進香客具有較少的禁忌。此進香活動並無繁複的進香儀式及進香組織,重點儀式相當明確,掬火是其主要目的;進香組織非常簡略,僅有活動必要的大轎組、頭旗組以及火缸管理等三個隨駕團隊。從這些方面來看,白沙屯媽祖進香活動確仍保留傳統、簡單的進香特色。
此進香活動具有滿足信眾祈願的功能。就白沙屯地區居民而言,此活動能夠滿足其安居樂業的祈求,並為當地薪火相傳的成年禮儀式。就白沙屯移外子弟而言,此活動是他們回歸認同的重要管道。至於非白沙屯進香客前來參與,則涵蓋見習、研究、修行、觀光、突破困境、認同文化、體驗神蹟等多樣原因。
Baishatun Mazu Pilgrimage Mission so far is the longest-distance cult activity in Taiwan and was reputed for all its pilgrims worship the Mazu by traveling on their feet. The procedure of the activity has its particularity of following Mazu''s will completely.
This research based on a pilgrim''s point of view in order to reveal how she/he felt during the whole pilgrimage mission. Throughout researches and surveys, it appears that the pilgrims consider that by participating the activity Baishatun Mazu will voluntarily feed them back her spiritual power, give them blesses and eliminate their disasters and misfortunes.
The image of Baishatun Mazu is quite personalized, thus, pilgrims enjoy few taboos under the whole procedure of the pilgrimage mission. The major ritual of this activity is quite specific and the organization is very simple. To view from above-mentioned aspects, the activity still reserves traditional and simple characteristics.
The pilgrimage mission satisfies folks’ supplications. As far as Baishatun’s inhabitants are concerned, this activity meets their hopes of leading in peaceful and cheerful lives, it also treated as a local grownups ceremony. However, to the outward migration of Baishatun, this activity is the most important way to get their identifications back.
As regarding to the purpose of non-Baishatun’s participants will be of varies intentions of extending their horizons, studying, practicing Taoist rules, or for sign seeing, difficulty breakthrough, culture identification and miracle experience …etc.
